72 Hours in Santorini, Greece

Labor Day Weekend in Santorini.  Is it crazy to take a 13 hour flight for a 72 hour vacation?  Maybe.  Was it worth it?  Absolutely.  See below for our 3-day itinerary.

Day 1: Friday

We landed in Santorini in the afternoon, were picked up at the airport by a driver (arranged in advance through our hotel), and dropped off at Andronis Luxury Suites, our home for the next 3 nights.

We enjoyed a traditional Greek lunch at Karma, lounging by the infinity pool, and a fine dining experience at Lycabettus Restaurant at our hotel.

Day 2: Saturday

Our most action-packed day!  We woke up around 6 AM and explored Oia by foot from 7-10 AM.  The streets were empty due to the time of day and lack of cruise ship traffic.  With the place to ourselves, we were easily able to see and spend time at so many picturesque spots in Oia.

After our self-guided walking tour, we headed back to the hotel for breakfast on our terrace, a little more pool time, and of course a Greek salad by the pool for lunch.

At 3PM we were picked up by Santorini Yacht Club and driven to Amoudi Bay where our private catamaran charter departed from.  We spent the afternoon sailing around Santorini’s neighboring small islands and swimming in the Mediterranean.  The charter came with unlimited beer, wine, and a lovely dinner on the boat.  The experience concluded with Santorini’s famous sunset.  Our captain and first mate Paolo and Christine could not have been nicer or more knowledgeable – we highly recommend this tour if you are visiting Santorini!

Santorini Yacht Club dropped us back off at our hotel by 8:30 PM, where we concluded our evening enjoying our terrace and private pool.

Day 3: Sunday

Since this was a quick trip, we knew we wouldn’t spend much time taking photos; however, Santorini is stunning and we wanted a few good commemorative shots to share with our families.  The solution – hire a local pro!

At 9 AM, Kimonas Photography met us at the hotel for a 1 hour session.  Kimonas was efficient and told us exactly how to pose, taking the guesswork and weirdness out of it.  We also ended up seeing new parts of Santorini we did not previously discover on our own.  Two days later we received 70 perfect photos.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed a wine tasting and cheese pairing on the beach at Gaia Winery, a delicious Greek tapas lunch at Melitini, and massages at our hotel’s sister property Andronis Arcadia.  As a spoiled, pampered princess, I have had my fair share of spa days.  This one was exceptional.

Dinner was at Anthos at the Kirini Katikes Hotel followed by ice cream and packing for the flight home Monday morning.

Our Hotel – Andronis Luxury Suites in Oia

Our suite was exactly what you picture when you think of Santorini hotels – beautiful, facing the caldera, and complete with a jetted outdoor pool.  Overall, we highly recommend the property for its perfect central location in Oia, caldera views, and high level of service.

If you are only in Santorini for a handful of days, make sure to stay in Oia.  Santorini is bigger than the postcards let on and has several distinct towns.  Oia is the classic hilltop, white building/blue dome town from your Grecian dreams.  Accommodations here are more expensive for what you get, but will make it easier to access the majority of “attractions” in a short amount of time.

This looks like a beautiful place to visit. My daughter married a Greek man (on a 90-day fiance VISA), and I definitely want to go to Greece and see more of where he comes from. I love the idea of hiring a local photographer. We did that when we took our extended family (20 of us!) to a beach house in Mexico. They pictures turned out wonderful. I found your blog through Suzanne’s Picture Retirement. I’ll definitely be back.

That sounds like a wonderful trip to Mexico & some fantastic family memories! Greece was definitely a highlight of our year. Next time we’ll make it a longer stay!
